Find someone with experience (I have 18 years worth). All estheticians and cosmetologists are licensed to perform waxing services. You don't want someone that only offers the service but one that specializes in bikini and body waxing. Seek referrals or try a less invasive wax such as eyebrows or lip to make sure you are comfortable with the facility and technician.
Your skin is often more sensitive the time near your period and waxing can be more painful. Therefore your appointment should not be any closer then 4 days before or after your period. Understandably most places will not perform bikini waxing while you are on you period. Shower and LIGHTLY exfoliate the area right before your appointment using warm, not hot water. Make sure you are extra clean.
The hair needs to be between 1/4 and a 1/2 inch. Any shorter then you won't get good results, any longer it will be more painful and take more time. There are several categories for bikini waxing all based on how much hair you want removed. A basic bikini is just a little tidy up of any hair that might extend beyond your swimsuit line. An extreme bikini removes a little bit more depending on the clients wishes. A brazilian removes everything except the back. The Hollywood wax removes everything front and back. For a bikini wax service you will be asked to remove your clothing from the waist down. If you are only getting a basic bikini then you can leave your underwear on. You will be given a towel to drape with so you will not be completely exposed. The wax technician will apply melted wax in sections. It will be quite warm but not hot enough to cause a burn. The skin is then held taught and the wax is removed. This process is continued until we reach the desired affect.
There will be redness in the area for several hours. Everyone has a different pain threshold but I won't kid you that it is painless (as many salons claim). There will be a sharp pain that lasts for a split second then the process is repeated. I recommend taking two Tylenol before your appointment. It definitely gets easier over time.
Schedule your wax with someone that has experience and a good reputation. You should ask two questions, "How many Brazilians have you done and what type of wax do you use?" The answers need to be "ALOT and HARD WAX". If these are not their answers then I recommend you look elsewhere. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to find an experienced wax technician. Usually they will be an esthetician who specializes in waxing and skin care.
